Why Trying Harder Things Makes Us Stronger (and Why the Easy Path Keeps Us Stuck)

Updated: Dec 26, 2024

Avoiding challenges doesn’t remove them. Instead, it allows our fears and doubts to grow louder.

Have you ever noticed how doing the things we fear or find difficult often leaves us feeling stronger, more capable, and more alive? Yet, when we stick to the comfortable, easy tasks, we’re often left feeling restless, anxious, or unfulfilled. There’s a reason for that, and it has everything to do with growth—or the lack of it.

The Comfort Trap

The easy path is tempting. It feels safe, predictable, and free from immediate discomfort. Whether it's avoiding that challenging project at work, skipping the gym because the couch feels too inviting, or dodging an uncomfortable conversation, taking the easier road feels better in the moment. But here’s the catch: the comfort we seek can quietly trap us in anxiety and stagnation.

Why? Because avoiding challenges doesn’t remove them. Instead, it allows our fears and doubts to grow louder. That project we put off? It looms larger in our minds. The gym session we skipped? Now we feel guilty and less confident about our health. The conversation we avoided? It turns into nagging tension that follows us around. Easy choices provide short-term relief but long-term stress.

Growth Comes Through Resistance

Think about any muscle in your body. To grow stronger, it needs to face resistance—it has to push, pull, and adapt to weight or tension. The same applies to our minds, our skills, and even our emotions. We only grow when we face resistance.

Taking on something hard—something we fear, something uncertain—forces us to stretch beyond our comfort zone. That’s where real growth happens. Every time you step up to a challenge, you tell yourself, I can handle this. It’s uncomfortable, sure, but discomfort is often a signal of progress.

Over time, the hard things that once seemed impossible become easier. The weight you once couldn’t lift becomes part of your warm-up. The conversation you dreaded turns into a meaningful breakthrough. The task you avoided becomes a skill you now master.

Anxiety and Avoidance: A Vicious Cycle

The relationship between avoidance and anxiety is sneaky but powerful. When we avoid hard things, we often feel temporary relief—but this reinforces the idea that hard things are dangerous or unbearable. So the next time we face a similar challenge, our anxiety increases. The cycle repeats.

But when you face a hard task—when you push through discomfort instead of running from it—you weaken anxiety's grip. You prove to yourself that you’re capable. You realize that hard things are rarely as bad as your mind made them out to be. And even when they are tough, you discover that you can survive, adapt, and learn.

How to Start Doing the Hard Things

  1. Start Small but Consistent: Don’t wait for motivation to tackle massive challenges. Start with small wins. Challenge yourself daily to do one thing you’d normally avoid—even if it’s as simple as making that phone call or waking up 10 minutes earlier.

  2. Reframe Discomfort: Instead of seeing discomfort as something to escape, see it as a sign of growth. Every moment of discomfort is strengthening your mind and expanding your capacity.

  3. Focus on the Aftermath: Think about how you’ll feel after completing the hard task. Pride, relief, and momentum are powerful rewards that come from doing what you feared.

  4. Embrace Failure as Progress: Hard things come with the risk of failure, and that’s okay. Every setback teaches you something new, making you stronger for the next challenge.

Doing the hard things in life doesn’t just make you stronger—it frees you. It liberates you from the nagging anxiety of avoidance and unlocks a confidence you didn’t know you had. Easy choices might feel good for a moment, but hard choices are what build a life of strength, purpose, and fulfillment.

So, ask yourself: What’s one hard thing I can tackle today? Start there, and watch yourself grow.
